Episode 25: On falling in love with women when you've historically only been with men.

Exactly three years ago, Lauren McBrayer and I crossed paths at a writer's retreat in rural Connecticut lead by Dani Shapiro. It was an intimate 48 hours, and in the midst of it all, a seed was planted for two things: Me revealing to her that my first romantic relationship had been with woman, her revealing to me she was in love with a woman but married (to a man) with three kids. In the weeks and months following the retreat, we talked endlessly on the phone, left long and windy voice notes, and started to build a friendship around this shared knowing in our hearts: I'm straight but I don't always feel straight.

A lot has changed since then, and I'll leave most of it in today's podcast for you to find out, but know that what came out of that experience was not only a beautiful friendship but a stunning book. That would be Lauren's novel, LIKE A HOUSE ON FIRE.
